Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh generally hits a few venues over the course of a year, but he ended 2016 with a rare trip outside his typical haunts – and outside the continental 48 as well. Lesh brought his Friends over to Hawaii, playing shows in 50th state on December 29th and 31st. For both shows, Terrapin Crossroads Grahame Lesh, Scott Law, Ross James, Jason Crosby and Alex Koford performed with Phil.
The show on the 29th took place at the Castle Theater at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului, HI, opening up with a fun “Jack Straw” and treating fans to lots of Grateful Dead classics throughout. With songs like a “Help > Slip > Franklin’s” combination and a fun “New Speedway Boogie > The Other One > New Speedway Boogie” sandwich, there’s no denying that this was a great performance!
The Grateful magic continued on New Year’s Eve, when the band opened up with “Shakedown Street” and continued with some of the band’s most exciting music. They brought out hits like “Estimated Prophet” into “Eyes of the World,” “Terrapin Station,” “Scarlet/Fire”, “St. Stephen” into “The Eleven” and so much more.
